REAPER vs Logic Pro

REAPER is famously sparse out of the box. It includes a basic synth (ReaSynth) and a sampler (ReaSamplOmatic5000), but they are utilitarian and lack the polish of modern VSTs. There is no 70GB sound library. You are expected to bring your own third-party plugin collection. While this keeps the software lightweight, it is a major hurdle for beginners who want to make music immediately without spending extra money on Komplete, Serum, or Spitfire libraries. Factory content is capable but thinner; third-party plugins are the normal path.

With the introduction of 'Fixed Item Lanes' in REAPER 7, its comping workflow now rivals Logic's, but with more flexibility. You can edit audio with surgical precision, split, stretch, and crossfade without grid restrictions. 'Dynamic Split' allows for automatic transient detection and slicing. REAPER's 'Spectral Edits' allow you to view and edit the frequency spectrum of audio clips directly on the timeline, a feature usually reserved for iZotope RX. It is non-destructive and incredibly fast.

No Apple-style Session Players suite; power users script and chain third-party tools instead.

Surprisingly, REAPER is a solid video editor. You can cut, crossfade, and process video clips just like audio items. It supports a wide range of codecs and is lightweight for scoring to picture. Many game audio designers use REAPER to batch export thousands of assets. It supports video window docking and multiple video tracks, which is rare for a DAW.

REAPER can handle up to 64 channels per track, making it natively capable of 7.1.4 or higher immersive formats. However, it requires setting up complex routing matrices or using the Dolby Atmos Composer plugin (external). It does not have a 'one-click' Atmos renderer built into the master bus by default in the same integrated way Logic does.
